What is Metabolic Syndrome? – Metabolic Syndrome Causes

What is Metabolic syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur together, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes (To name but 3!) These conditions include increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels. The condition is also known by many other names including Syndrome X, insulin resistance syndrome, and dysmetabolic syndrome.

What causes Metabolic Syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome is often associated with being overweight or obese, and a lack of physical activity. But the cause is a diet high in sugar, carbs and processed foods which spike your sugars leading to permanently raised insulin levels. Blood sugar levels are mainly controlled by the hormone insulin. If you have insulin resistance, too much glucose can build up in your blood stream. Insulin resistance is a key feature of type2 diabetes.
