What is PCOS? – The 3 Main Features

PCOS is a common condition that affects how a woman’s ovaries work.

It has 3 main features:

-irregular periods – your ovaries fail to release eggs (ovulation)
-excess testosterone – having high levels of “male hormones” in your body, which can result in acne and excess facial or body hair
-polycystic ovaries – your ovaries become enlarged and contain fluid-filled sacs that surround the eggs

What causes PCOS?

Having persistently high insulin levels in the body, which is the hormone that controls sugar levels, is the primary cause. Increased insulin levels lead to increased testosterone levels. Being overweight is associated with PCOS, but it is not the cause. Once you understand that it is your raised insulin levels – raised in response to what you eat.. you have the option to change your diet and reverse your PCOS!

If you have PCOS (whether or not you’re overweight) reducing your insulin levels and avoiding spikes is key. This is where ProLongevity can be of assistance to help control your spikes and identify the best lifestyle choices for you.
